Topkapı Palace: An Empire Centre

Topkapı Palace in Istanbul, which  is the most oldest and  widest  palace from past to present in the world.  Topkapı Palace was  located in Sarayburnu  which is also Ottoman Empire’s control centre. The capital city of Ottoman Empire was controlled from Topkapı Palace where was lived on Ottoman Sultan and his dynasty. Topkapı  Palace was used as a control central. Topkapı Palace was  the primary residence of the Ottoman Sultans for approximately 400 years.

In addition, Topkapı  Palace had  built in 1465, after  twelve years of Fall of Costantinople in Fatih Sultan Mehmed Era ( 1451-1481 ). In early years, the name of the Topkapı Palace was  Saray-ı  Cedid-i  Amire which means new palace. Fatih Sultan Mehmed had wanted to Topkapı  Palace had consist of  many mansions and rooms not only one building.  So, construction had started  regarding to special desire of the Sultan. In Ottoman Era had been added  and recondited  somethings  to  building. In fact,  Topkapı Palace’s area was  700.000 square meters but its area is 80.000 square meters now.

In 1825, Topkapı  Palace was reconstructed as of wood and its name was called Topkapı Palace, all that area. Topkapı Palace was  the primary residence of the Ottoman Sultans for approximately 400 years.  Topkapı Palace is used as a museum since 1924. There are 10 mosques, 3 namazgahes,  ( open- air prayer place, usually an unroofed and stone platform  ) 8 dormitory buildings,  14 Turkish Bathes- Hammam, 2 hospitals, 2 pharmacies,  5 schools, 12 libraries, 7 treasure houses, 6 towers,  22 fountains,  11 shafts, 2 cisterns, 6 pools, 2 bubble levels,  1 hanging garden, 20 dome kitchens,  348 rooms, and saloons, and summerhouses  in Sarayburnu, in Topkapı Palace. Moreover, Topkapı Palace’s view sees Golden Horn, Marmara Sea and The Bosphorus. Topkapı Palace is a large palace which was the primary residence of the  Ottoman Sultans and it is also known the first foundation place of Istanbul in acropolis hill. First Courtyard is known Bab-ı Hümayun which is entered Imperial Gate.  First Courtyard functioned is the largest of all the courtyards of the palace. In First Courtyard, there are milt, wood depot, special vegetable gardens, palace oven and troop of guardsmen. Çinili Köşk and Archeology Museum are also in First Courtyard. In addition, Hagia Eirene Museum is in First Courtyard.

Second Courtyard is the centre of the state and government which is also called Diwan Square.  Only Sultans rode a horse in these area where was hosted  official ceremonies. Tower of Justice is in there where is located between the Imperial Council and the Harem. All of Istanbul and  harbour had peeped whose enterance is Harem part.

Harem enterance opens to the Room of Sultan’s Mother then the other of apartments. Big Turkish Bath  and  Sultan Saloon with Dome are next parts of th Harem. There are a lot of fountains and owens in Harem.  Big saloon with interesting pools and fountains was III. Murad Era work art and also it has several figurative tiles in there. Deep part of the saloon opens  Yemiş Odası- Fruit Room which was decorated intersting fruit and flower patterns.

All of the service team, hierarchical group, Sultan’s Mother- she was also owner of Harem, concubines,  eunuchs,  the sultan’s consorts,  the princes and the favourites, the concubines, the Chief Harem Eunuch and dynasty were lived Harem. Numbeer of apartments are not known nowaday but many of the rooms, apartments  and feauwere designed by Mimar Sinan.

Imperial Treasure is the richest collection of the world. Topkapı Palace Dagger ”

Privy Chamber houses the Chamber of the Sacred Relics in Topkapı Palace which was constructed by Mimar Sinan. It houses what are considered to be  the most sacred relics of the Muslim World. Quran is always recited in Chamber of the Sacred Relics and visitor hear  Quran and see Sacred Relics. Century of 16., The Ottoman Empire conquested Egypt which carried the Sacred Relics and until that time The Ottoman Empire protected all of them. In the Chamber of the Sacred Relics includes the cloak of the Prophet Muhammad, two swords, a bow,  seal, one tooth, a hair of his beard, his battle sabres, an autographed letter, the swords of the first four Caliphs, The Staff of Moses,one of  the first  monuscript Qurans, the Key of Kaaba, private persons swords,the turban of Joseph and a carpet of the daughter of Mohammed and other relics which are known as the Sacred Trusts in Topkapı Palace.

Sultans dresses are also in Topkapı Palace which are exhibited right side of courtyard. However, Sultans dresses are matchless in the world.  Approximately 2500 dresses was hidden in special chests. Silk, silver and gold brocades  Sultans dresses  are exhibited with silk carpet and special sajjade.

Watch Collection Chamber is the most ricest  collection. In the enterance , watches are there which were own Turkish Artist. Invaluable wall and table clocks, hunting watches are dated centuries of 16.-19.

Nowadays, Topkapı Palace is visited by big tourist groups which is served as a museum. In 1985, Topkapı Palace was listed Unesco World Heritage List.
